Low Winter Sun at St. Joseph, Michigan
Sometimes it pays off to experiment, after taking some "safe" shots at the location, I placed a 10-Stop ND filter over the lens and pointed it at the sun. I expected the final exposure to be drowning in all sorts of glare and low contrast problems.
Foggy morning at Chicago Botanic Garden
Rare conditions create opportunity to capture rare photos of familiar scenes. When I receive Fog Advisory Alert or other inclement weather alerts, I immediately try to figure out where to go to witness it. It helps to have some areas around your house scouted out.
The Confluence of Rivers, Iceland
I drove over a bridge in Iceland when I saw the confluence of two rivers with different color water mixing. I passed the bridge, found a safe place to park my car and hiked back. The way the water mixed was quickly and constantly changing, it took some trial and error to figure out the best shutter speed and to cature the right moment.
Chicago Skyline at Night
I got to the location way past civil twilight, so the beautiful deep blue glow was long gone, the only glow left was yellow light pollution from the city. To fix the unsightly city yellows I desaturated all colors almost completely, then toned the photo blue.
Sunset at Emerald Lake, Yoho National Park
Symmetric composition with dynamic range exceeding what can be captured in a single frame. A splash of yellow in the cabin creates color contrast for a more dynamic image.
